The semifluorinated Alkanes (SFAs) serve as a well-tolerated alternative drug delivery medium to water. They dissolve drug compounds that normally could not penetrate the physiological barrier. SFAs allow administration of drugs that otherwise could not reach the therapeutic target. This medium allows better dissolution/dispersion of the drug, e.g. in case of drugs that are otherwise poorly water soluble. Furthermore, SFAs improve the stability of drugs due to the prevention of hydrolytic reactions. This makes them a highly valuable tool for improved drug delivery.
In addition, SFAs have excellent binding properties for oxygen and can therefore be used to prolong the viability of organs for transplantations. Please see the factsheet for more details.
In summary, SFAs offer very unique features as a drug delivery platform:
• SFAs have excellent spreading and wetting properties
• SFAs dissolve poorly soluble compounds and create stable suspensions
• SFAs are chemically and biologically inert without causing irritations
• to mucosal tissues even in ocular applications
• SFAs increase mucosal absorption (bioavailability) |
